Another Big Gray Gelding

Image
We'll call this one Moose. As aforementioned, Oscar has been my main squeeze for the past two lessons. I've been starting to figure him out more, but he makes my bad habits waaayyy more obvious. Thanks for nothing, horse. October 1st After not riding the previous week due to other obligations, I was just thrilled to have a complete flatwork drilling ride. Can you taste the sarcasm? Because I can. Lots of no stirrup work, transitions, some counter canter, and, of course, swapping horses. I ended up on Penny and Linus as well, but most of the ride was spent on Oscar. It was my first ride in the new saddle, and, not gonna lie, I had some reservations about it. Listen, friends, if you buy a CC saddle, expect a CC saddle. I also have to wrap my stirrup leathers because apparently 18 year olds can't have normal length legs. Final point of complaint: it squeaked. It squeaked so much. I have gone through one round of needsfoot oil, and round two is happening today. ...

Imagine college, but easier

It actually does exist, and it's called "freshman year" if you're an architecture student. It was so easy last semester to get into a posting routine. I was basically going for every other day, but the past month and a half, I've just been asking myself "When are you gonna get around to updating that blog of yours?" Well, today is the day. Me, constantly - image from WRAL Sports Fan It's been busy, to put things lightly. 17 credits was a breeze a year ago, especially considering the fact that I had two joke classes that I had to get out of the way. This year? Nope. Nada. Not a chance. I wish I could say that physics is my joke class, but then I'd have to know what I was doing. Which I don't. The remaining 14 credits include one course for my honors certificate and then four architecture specific courses. I assure you, I'm learning things. My hand drawing has improved by miles, too. I'm just stretched a bit thin, and some profess...

Possible Lease Pon #1

Image
Meet Oscar Except, we already know Oscar. But on the flip side, we don't know Oscar as well as we thought. And by we, I mean me. "Stop blabbing, woman" I rode Oscar for the first time a little under a year ago, and I remember feeling quite comfortable with him. I can say with 99% certainty that he was comfortable with me too; this horse is unflappable. He's an OTTB, and while he does get a bit speedy while cantering in groups, you literally just have to whisper "whoa" and immediately he's right back with you. It's because of this that I strongly considered him as my lease horse for next year. Unfortunately, his chances of coming home with me were shot after the very first lesson. A fellow team member told me about all the issues Oscar had and still has. He was only used twice in my lesson last year. The first time was when he being ridden by someone else (and subsequently broke her wrist or elbow or something in that general area). The ...

Adventures In Leasing

Image
I'm in an odd spot, honestly. The search for a lease horse has officially begun. Technically, it officially began like two weeks ago when I sent the first text, which I didn't receive a response to. I sent a Facebook message also, which went unacknowledged as well. Miss Jan was actually the first person to respond. I can always trust Jan. She's basically keeping an ear open for me at the moment. Go, Jan In case you didn't know, 3'0" horses are basically magical unicorns on the American market. That 6" difference between "local show" horse and "can clear the fences at a non local show but that's about it" horse is the best way to double a price. In less sarcastic terms, the type of horse I'm looking for is just a bit too talented for bopping around in the C ring. This is reflected in a lack of monthly leases and the phrase "contact for pricing". Where is my "from lowest to highest price" option? ...

"Today's lesson is sponsored by 'The Correct Lead'"

Image
My first sponsorship. So long adult amateurs. Haha, no. I could barely sit the trot without stirrups on Wednesday, let alone post. Coach S wasn't happy with how the last show went, so it was all about flatwork. I started out on Oscar, another gray gelding. I typically do well with those. Then it was on to Diego, then Dori, then Murry. Of course, I was the only one who managed to pick up the wrong lead . . . twice . It was a very "ugh" type thing, along with not being able to do anything without stirrups, which I'm usually good at. So it was a bad lesson, and I was pretty bummed out, but fortunately, Dia and Kal are absolute idiots, and I mean that in the most endearing connotation. Dinner with them made me feel 100% better.
