A Little Banged Up (Ch) (G)

Let's do a little Fuego deep dive.

His JC name is A Little Banged Up (2014, Ch, G), which is appropriate considering not only his recent splint but also his tendency to show up every day with a new scratch or bite or tear or something. It should go without saying that his JC name will not be his show name.

His sire is Majesticperfection and dam is Tick Tick Boom. Just a whole family of . . . wonderful names.

Majesticperfection was a 2006 model with a limited but successful career on the track. He was purchased for $370k by Padua Stables in 2008 and had six starts total with five wins. Apparently, he even set a track record in 2010 at the Iowa Sprint. He retired to stud at Airdrie in 2018 and then was sold to Haras Rapetti to continue his career in Uraguay. Brereton C. Jones of Airdrie Stud had this to say about Majesticperfection: We’ve long subscribed to the belief that brilliance is what makes most sires, and Majesticperfection was an absolutely brilliant racehorse . . . He ran four races at six furlongs on a dry track, led at every step, and he never went slower than 1:08 3/5.  We’ve never stood a stallion with the pure speed that this horse had, and when you look at the fact that he came home in :11 and change in those races, I don’t have any doubts he could’ve stretched out further."

I don't understand much about horse racing, but his progeny have done sufficiently well, and a few have nabbed notable wins. The thing that encouraged me to make this post is that I was looking at Fuego the other day and thought, "Man, he could be a good Secretariat stand in," and what do you know? He's got Secretariat way way way back on his sire's side. Other notable names include Affirmed, Storm Cat, and Northern Dancer, all pretty far back.

Majesticperfection, certainly my type when it comes to Thoroughbreds

Majesticperfection passed away in early 2021 due to laminitis. Padua Stables was sold in 2019 to the tune of $17.9 million.

Tick Tick Boom is a Maryland bred mare (whoop whoop!) who hasn't done a whole lot. She had 10 starts total and placed three times, two of which were wins. After that, she had three foals that I can find: Fuego, Creative Stride, and Wasabi Girl (who is a near-full sibling to Fuego). Overall, info about her is extremely limited beyond pedigree. Her sire, Cuvee, had a solid record, both on his own and in his progeny. At some point, he was sold to the Jockey Club of Turkey for breeding purposes but he seems to be non-existent on their stud website.

Fuego's damsire, Cuvee

So, what did I learn from all this research? Well, Fuego was born in West Virginia for one. Take of that what you will. I also learned that today is the big red boy's birthday. Happy Birthday, Fuego Eggo!

  1. I love reading about individual race horse histories! Equibase has complete profiles and results, including the “charts” that are basically one pagers for each race, with a sentence dedicated to each individual horse. Looks like Fuego won a couple in his time!

    1. I saw these! And I was able to use the race dates to find videos of his wins. In the two times he came first, he smoked the track. He definitely has a motor, just doesn't want to use it most days lol
